On the fifth day we kept it pretty simple again! All followers had to do to enter was like the post! Then, for a bonus entry, they could share the post to their story.
On the sixth day, we wanted to showcase one of our latest products, the Step 1 Qbank+ for medical students (one component of the Medical Student Study Strong System). We asked that followers read the questions and drop their answers in the comments of the post! In case you were wondering, the answer was dissociative identity disorder. Here's a look at the full answer and explanation from the Qbank+.
This patient’s history is most consistent with dissociative identity disorder (DID), which was previously termed multiple personality disorder. In DID, a disruption occurs in identity, affect, behavior, memory, perception, consciousness, and/or sensory motor functioning. Patients often forget their actions and behaviors over the course of hours, days, or weeks and appear to alternate between two or more personalities with different names, manners, and voices. The prevalence of DID is 1% and is more common in women. Symptoms generally arise in response to significant trauma; in this case, the chronic sexual harassment by the patient’s boss appears to be the trigger. The disorder is chronic and fluctuating. Many patients have suicidal ideation and behavior. Common comorbid conditions include posttraumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, and substance use disorders.
Schizophrenia and DID have some overlapping symptoms. For example, hallucinations are a prominent feature of schizophrenia, and many patients with DID have auditory hallucinations, often since childhood. However, patients with DID sense the voice as coming from inside their own head, while those with schizophrenia sense it as coming from outside. Also, patients with schizophrenia have other symptoms that do not occur in DID, such as flat affect, delusions, disorganized thinking, and bizarre behavior.
While patients with dissociative amnesia have memory problems related to identity, they don’t have additional distinct personality states as in patients with DID. The memory loss in dissociative amnesia usually is specific to a traumatic event or general for the patient’s life history. In DID, patients have recurrent gaps in memory, usually hours that they can’t remember.
As in depersonalization disorder, patients with DID sometimes experience depersonalization, or a feeling of detachment from their emotions, thoughts, and actions. However, patients with depersonalization disorder do not generally experience memory loss.
Patients with delusional disorder have fixed false beliefs that persist for ≥ 1 month, with no functional impairment. The patient in the vignette has disturbances of her identity and memory, not delusions.
On the seventh day of the 12 Days 12 Ways giveaway event, we wanted to hear from some of our MedStudy customers! So we asked our users to review their favorite product in the comments.
