Kashif Piracha, MD, of the Texas A&M University College of Medicine, Methodist Willowbrook Site, explains the KDIGO 2021 clinical practice guideline for the management of blood pressure in chronic kidney disease (CKD).
This guideline updates the previous KDIGO guideline on this topic released in 2012. It makes a notable change to proper blood pressure measurement procedures and target blood pressure goals which were inspired in large part by the SPRINT trial.

Strictly adhering to the steps outlined in this video will ensure that the SPRINT trial data and outcomes can be successfully reproduced in the clinical setting. All healthcare personnel now have validation to implement these steps in their practice and only record standardized blood pressure measurements. Furthermore, all hypertensive patients with CKD, except children and transplant recipients, should be treated to a target systolic blood pressure of 120 mmHg.
